The Sociology Department has recently launched it's Sociology Club, where students from all years - even those who do not take the subject can come together and discuss social issues.

The club usually takes place between 3.30-4.30pm on Thursday afternoons in room L1, however sometimes it is necessary to change the day - in which case notices will appear in the window of L1 to inform of the new date.

Week Six

Polygamy : The girls shared their views on polygamy and considered the possibility that it could be rooted in economic inequality. They then discussed the concept of romantic love and whether it was purely a western concept.

Week Five

Religion has no place in modern society : The girls discussed the role of religion in society as an agent of social control and as a way of stablising society transmitting norms and values.

Week Four

Does ethnicity matter?: The girls discussed what their ethnic identity meant to them and the idea that whiteness was the normality by which all else was measured in Britain.

Week Three

Why aren't teenagers interested in politics: The girls were tested on their knowledge of contemporary British politics - the result being that few of them had any substantial knowledge of the subject. The subsequent discussions revealed that there was a general belief amongst the girls that politics was a boring topic (perhaps a view which had been imposed on them by the media) and also that it was a domain for middle class white men, and not females from ethnic minorities - hence it had never been an area they had aspired to go into.

Week Two

Male Pin-ups: This week, the girls discussed the changing masculinities of their favourite male pin ups and considered the role of men in society today and whether there was still a fixed masculine identity. They also discussed masculinity in relation to ethnicity and suggested that ethnic minorities may still hold more traditional views of masculinity

Launch Week

Big Brother is watching you?: The students were asked to discuss topics which interested them and these included the ethics behind the recent introduction of security cameras in the sixth form block. Girls were concerned about the necessity of these measures and whether they really did make the school a safer place.
