The latest news from EWS with pictures, reports and the very best in quality journalism!

20.7.07

The black clouds continue to gather and it feels more like October than late July. All very strange indeed. The school year ends today; another twelve months has raced by and everyone at EWS needs a holiday! It has been another massively successful year for the school and we hope that we've given the world a glimpse of our successes on these pages.

As always at this time, we are saying goodbye to many friends, but a special mention this year goes to Mr Harding and Mrs Burden, who are both retiring after many, many years of service. They have taught thousands of pupils over the years, all of whom will have benefited from their excellent knowledge, compassion and good humour. We wish them both a long an happy retirement.

So let's hope that summer will finally arrive in the next few days. We wish all our pupils and staff an excellent holiday. Relax, sleep and, most importantly of all, have fun!

School starts again for pupils on Wednesday 5th of September. But that is weeks and weeks away.

That was 2006/07.

And now it is over.

Last night saw a wonderful dance show at the school. A vast range of dance styles were on show, representing the hugely diverse nature of our school. Most of the choreography had been devised by the girls themselves with help and guidance from our sixth formers. Thanks also to Miss Curley and Miss Vanstone for getting everything organised.

The weather continues to be very pleasant and the atmosphere at EWS is one of hard-working determination. Students who are preparing for exams (and there is a lot of them) don't seem to showing the strain (although some of their teachers certainly are) but there is an unmistakable atmosphere of anticipation as these exams get ever-closer. We assure all our pupils that their hard work now will certainly bring rewards when the results are published.

In other news, the School has been awarded Training School status, a real acolade and one that you will be hearing a lot more about in future weeks.

The Summer Term starts today and everyone seems a little more tanned than they did before the break. Short sleeve blouses and shirts are much in evidence and there is a general feeling of happiness that the summer is on its way. Contrast this with a front page I read on the way to work "Snow by Friday". Oh great.

Exams edge ever closer and there is much to do for students in all years.

Photos to follow from the Geography Department's trip to Iceland! Apparently they had a fantastic time. I'm not surprised.

The Head gave a summary of another excellent year in the life of EWS and, once again, we were joined by Doctor Wilkinson, great nephew of Ellen Wilkinson.

The guest speaker was the superb Jenni Trent Hughes, author, broadcaster and, frankly inspirational, speaker. Follow this link to her (incorrect!) Wikipedia entry. She presented prizes to nearly one hundred pupils for their excellent contributions to the school. A full list of winners will be published shortly.

Happy New Year! EWS returns for another busy term with lots to look forward to. Please check the News page regularly for all the latest goings-on.

20.12.06

The end of the long winter term finally arrives and all of us at EWS are in need of a really good sit down in front of the TV. And a long sleep. And maybe a mince pie or two. As I write the tradtional Year 12 pantomime is entertaining an audience of very excitable girls in the hall, the canteen are preparing lunch and one or two teachers have been seen snoozing in the staffroom. During their free periods, naturally. Ah, the end of term. We love the end of term.

We are also preparing to bid fond farewell to Mrs Rippeth of the English Department, Miss De Bono of the RE Department and Mr. Meshkat of the Science Department. We wish them all the very best for the future.

So let's celebrate the arrival of a relaxing holiday. If you are celebrating Christmas then have a great one with your family and friends or if you are just putting your feet up then have a great time too!

Let's hope for good things in 2007. May it bring health, happiness and some much needed peace.

All the best,

EWS Website.
